In August of 2022, the Town of Boston changed the garbage and recycle pickup arrangement with Waste Management. You can read about the previous arrangement by clicking or tapping here. What follows below is a summary of how the new arrangement works...
The Town of Boston works with Waste Management for trash and recycling. You can contact them at 1-800-972-4545 on Monday thru Friday between 9:00am and 5:00pm.
Waste Management provides every residence with two carts (or "totes"), one for trash and one for recyclables. The carts stay with the residence and belong to Waste Management. They'll fix the carts if anything on them breaks through normal wear and tear (and it's pretty obvious when it's not) - so call them if your cart breaks. New homes will get carts from Waste Management. Finally, it's a very good idea to mark the inside of your carts with your address (I used permanent marker).
You should bag all your trash before putting it in your trash cart. Remember not to mix your recyclables and trash in the carts and please don't bag any of your recyclables, or put plastic bags in with your recyclables. Click or tap here to see the recycling guidelines. And click or tap here to see general recycling information.
If you make more trash in a week than will fit into your cart, you can bag that extra trash (a 30-gallon size bag) and buy a pick-up sticker from Our Town Clerk for $3. Put the sticker on your bag and then put your bag out with your cart on your regular pick-up day. If you need to, you can also buy another cart from Waste Management by contacting Our Town Clerk at 941-6113 extension 5.
Waste Management picks up your trash every week and your recyclables every other week (along with and on the same day as your trash). Please put your trash and recyclables at the roadside by 6:00AM on your scheduled collection day. Please don't put it out more than 24 hours early. On holidays that fall on a weekday (Monday thru Friday), collection will be one day later. The holidays that "count" are: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
To learn your weekly "pick-up day", click or tap here to see the schedule from 2024, or contact Our Town Clerk at 941-6113 extension 5. You can also see your pickup schedule by starting at Waste Management's pickup schedule display website ... click or tap here. Type in your residence address and click Verify - it should show you your next pickup date, "regular" schedule, and holiday details. There are options there that will display your recycle pickup schedule too.
Please leave about three feet between the carts when you park them at the street so the garbage truck "pick-up arm" can pick them up and dump them properly. Park your carts at the street with the cart handles toward your house - the garbage truck picks them up and dumps them expecting the lid to open towards the road (It's pretty cool to watch it happen).
You can put out three (3) big/bulky items (like appliances or furniture) per month after contacting Waste Management to schedule a pick-up date (their phone number is up at the top of this page). As of September 2023, their online scheduling system is poor - call instead! A mattress and box spring together count as just one big item. Cut, roll, and tape up carpet so it's 4 feet long and 18 inches around - or smaller. Christmas trees are considered a big item. You put your big item(s) out with your trash cart on your regular day. Appliances with refrigerants (like freezers, refrigerators, or air conditioners) won't be picked up unless you can certify the refrigerant was removed (click or tap here for more info). Cars can be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation by calling them at 1-855-278-9474 or visiting https://www.wheelsforwishes.org and they will come and get your donation, free of charge.
Recycling electronics and hazardous household waste (like oil-based paint, batteries, pesticides) is an option! Neither the regular trash pickup nor the Town Hall accepts that stuff. You can recycle that stuff by activating the At Your Door service (more below). Click or tap to read New York State law regarding electronics recycling.
The Town of Boston Highway Department will pick up brush and leaves throughout town starting on April 1, May 1, September 1, and October 1. You can also start composting which is an easy, economical and efficient way to recycle because it reuses yard waste and enriches the soil. Spring is perfect time to start a backyard compost area!
